If you live in Cloverly, you already know how winter can wear on you. Maryland's cold months bring gray skies, bare trees, and days that never quite warm up. Many families and couples from this part of the Mid-Atlantic start looking for a change of scenery as soon as the holidays pass, and the Caribbean can feel like a very different world. St. John is a small island in the US Virgin Islands, and its winter months are mild and sunny by common knowledge of the region. Staying in one of our villa rentals at the Westin St John Resort gives you room to spread out, cook a meal, and slow down. This page is meant to help you think through the trip before you commit to anything.

Planning your winter escape from Cloverly
- Getting to the island. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan your connections with some slack, since island travel tends to move at its own pace. Once you arrive, remember that driving on St. John is on the left, which may feel unfamiliar at first.
- Choosing when to leave. Deciding when to leave Maryland is really about balancing the cold you want to escape with the crowds and prices you want to avoid. Mid-winter tends to be the busiest stretch for warm-weather travel, while later winter can bring a quieter feel. Think about school calendars and work schedules, and let us know your dates so we can point out what is open and available.
- Planning the stay. Villa rentals are typically booked by the week, which suits a winter escape well because it gives you time to unwind. Think about how many people are coming, whether you want a kitchen for most meals, and how much of your time you want to spend out exploring. A well-chosen villa can be the center of the trip, so take a little care in picking one.
