The Westin St John Resort
St John Condos can help travelers from Portland, Connecticut, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John, with villas rented at the Westin St John Resort and a local team ready to answer questions before you book.
Portland sits in the Northeast, where winters are cold and the spring air can still feel sharp well into the season. For many people from this part of Connecticut, a week of snorkeling and lazy beach days on St. John is a welcome change of pace. The island is warm year round, the water is clear, and the days can move at a gentle, unhurried rhythm. Villa Rentals at the Westin St John Resort give you a home base for that kind of week. Rented by the week, a villa lets you keep your own schedule, cook a few meals, and step out toward the water when the mood strikes. You can plan a relaxed trip without packing every day with activities, which suits a vacation built around the sea.

Getting from Portland to St. John
- Reaching the island. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a little extra room in your day for this stretch, since moving between the airport, the taxi stand, and the boat is part of the journey. Bring what you need for the ferry in a small bag you can carry easily.
- Choosing when to leave. Connecticut winters are long and gray, so many people from Portland aim to leave during the coldest months, when the island feels especially inviting. Shoulder periods can also suit snorkeling well, with calm water and fewer crowds. Think about how much time you can take from work and family, and let the season you pick shape how you spend your days in the water.
- Planning the stay. Because villas are rented by the week, a full week is the natural length for a snorkeling trip. Decide early which beaches you want to try, and note that driving on St. John is on the left, which takes a bit of getting used to. Your local team at St John Condos can talk through the details with you before you book, so the week feels settled and ready when you arrive.
Frequently asked questions
Is a week long enough for snorkeling on St. John?
For most people from Portland, a week gives you room to snorkel several times, try different spots, and still rest between swims. Because the villas are rented by the week, you can settle in and let the trip find its own pace without rushing from one plan to the next.
Will I need to drive on the left side of the road?
Yes, traffic on St. John moves on the left, which can feel unfamiliar at first. Take your time on the roads when you arrive, and ask the St John Condos team any questions about getting around before you book your week.
