For travelers from Buffalo Soapstone, a beach trip to St. John offers something very different from the long northern winters of Alaska. The island sits in the warm Caribbean, where sand and clear water are the main reasons people come. Planning around the beach means thinking about how you will spend your days, from morning swims to slow afternoons in the shade. Staying in a villa gives you room to set your own pace. Rentals at the Westin St John Resort are booked by the week, so you can settle in, unpack, and let the trip unfold without rushing between hotel check-outs. Our local team can talk through which villa suits your group, so you arrive knowing what to expect and can focus on the water.

Planning Your Beach Trip From Buffalo Soapstone

  1. Reaching the Island. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, which has airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan your connections with some slack, since island travel rewards a relaxed approach. Once you land, the ferry ride itself is part of the start of your vacation.
  2. Choosing Your Dates. Think about the season you prefer for time on the beach. Caribbean weather is warm for much of the year, so your choice may come down to crowds, budget, and personal preference. Alaska travelers often enjoy leaving behind the cold months for a warmer stretch. Share your ideal dates with our team and we will help you weigh the options before you commit.
  3. Planning Your Stay. Choose a villa rental that fits the number of people traveling with you, then decide how you want your days to look. Build in a mix of beach time, rest, and simple outings. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, so keep that in mind if you plan to explore the island by car. Ask us anything before booking.
